If you live in Spain and feel like your electricity bill keeps creeping up, the issue might not just be how much energy you use — but when you use it.

At Compare The Mercado, one of the simplest ways we help expats reduce their electricity bills is by explaining how Spain’s peak and off-peak system works — and how small timing changes can create real savings without changing your lifestyle.

Let’s break it down clearly.

What Are Peak and Off-Peak Electricity Hours in Spain?

Most modern Spanish electricity tariffs follow a time-of-use system.

This means electricity is charged at different prices depending on the time of day.

The day is divided into three periods:

🔴 Peak (Punta) – most expensive🟡 Flat (Llano) – medium price🟢 Off-Peak (Valle) – cheapest

So the exact same dishwasher cycle could cost:

  • €0.15 at night

  • €0.50 during peak hours

Over 12 months, that difference adds up quickly.

Spain’s Standard Electricity Hours Explained

For most time-of-use contracts, the hours are:

Weekdays (Monday–Friday)

Peak (Most Expensive):10:00–14:0018:00–22:00

Flat (Medium Price):08:00–10:0014:00–18:0022:00–00:00

Off-Peak (Cheapest):00:00–08:00

Weekends & National Holidays

Off-Peak ALL day

Yes — Saturdays, Sundays and Spanish public holidays are charged at the cheapest rate for 24 hours.

This is a major saving opportunity that many homeowners and expats don’t realise.

When Should You Run Appliances to Save Money?

Here’s the simple rule:

👉 Run high-energy appliances at night or at weekends whenever possible.

Best Times (Cheapest)

  • Overnight (00:00–08:00)

  • Anytime Saturday or Sunday

  • National bank holidays

Avoid If Possible (Most Expensive)

  • 10:00–14:00

  • 18:00–22:00

Even shifting a few heavy appliances outside peak hours can noticeably reduce your bill.

Which Appliances Use the Most Electricity?

Focus on the biggest energy users first:

  • EV charging

  • Air conditioning

  • Pool heaters

  • Pool pumps

  • Electric water heaters

  • Washing machines

  • Tumble dryers

  • Dishwashers

  • Electric ovens

Lights, TVs and small electronics make far less impact.

If you’re going to change your routine, prioritise the appliances above.

How Much Could You Save?

Here’s a realistic example:

If you run:

  • 4 washing loads per week

  • 4 dishwasher cycles per week

  • Dryer twice per week

Moving these to off-peak hours could save:

👉 €15–€30 per month👉 €180–€360 per year

And that’s without reducing your usage — just using electricity more strategically.

Extra Tip for Expats & Holiday Homes

If you own a second property or holiday home in Spain, weekends are ideal for:

  • Laundry

  • Cleaning

  • Heating water

  • Running pool systems

You’re already there — and electricity is at its cheapest.

Many of my expat clients reduce their annual bills simply by timing usage better.

But Timing Is Only Half the Story

Using off-peak hours helps.

But it won’t fix everything.

If:

  • Your potencia is set too high

  • You’re on an expensive fixed 24-hour tariff

  • You’re on a default supplier rate

  • Your contract hasn’t been reviewed in years

You could still be overpaying — even if you use off-peak hours perfectly.

In many cases, adjusting the contract itself creates even bigger savings than changing habits.

Want Me to Check Your Electricity Bill?

If you’re unsure whether:

  • You’re on the right tariff

  • Your potencia is correct

  • You could be paying less

Send me your latest bill.

I’ll review it for free and tell you honestly whether savings are available.

No pressure. No obligation.

FAQs

Do all suppliers use the same peak and off-peak hours?

Most regulated time-of-use tariffs follow this structure. Some fixed tariffs don’t, or may only use two time periods. I can check your specific contract.

Is it really worth changing my routine?

For high-energy appliances, yes. Small electronics won’t make much difference.

Are weekends really cheaper all day?

Yes. From 00:00 Saturday through to 08:00 Monday, electricity is charged at off-peak rates (including national holidays).

Can switching supplier save more than changing usage times?

Often, yes. Many clients save hundreds per year by adjusting their tariff and potencia correctly.
